Skiing Utah Wrapped Up

With 10 resorts less than an hour from Salt Lake City International Airport, visitors to Utah on the hunt for snow spend more time on the slopes (and après ski) and less time in the car.

Believe it or not, unparalleled access to world-class ski resorts is just the icing on the cake. With 500 inches of dry snowfall annually, and flakes containing as little as 4% water, Utah really is home to the Greatest Snow on Earth ®.

Boasting 14 ski resorts in total, Utah offers ski experiences to suit any beginner, intermediate or pro. And then there are the amenities and services catering to lodge bunnies, foodies and children; think tubing, snowmobiling, luxurious spa treatments, award-winning restaurants and some of the world’s best ski/snowboard instructors.

Do you like to unwind with a glass of mulled wine after a long day on the slopes? Despite what you may have heard, Utah hasn’t been a dry state for many moons. To borrow a phrase from Utah.com: “The only things ‘dry’ around here are the snowflakes and the martinis.”

Park City

Utah’s resorts consistently deliver awesome snow. And thanks to tourist-friendly transport links it’s easy to try different ski spots without breaking your budget or wasting valuable slope time.

Want to stick close to the buzz of Utah’s Park City? Can’t say we blame you. One of North America’s top ski towns, it boasts two world-class resorts on your doorstep – Deer Valley and Park City Resort- excellent off-slope entertainment, and an array of shops and galleries.

Travelling to Park City with kids in tow? Top family destination, Park City Mountain Resort, has so much to keep your brood amused, you’ll be tempted to book your next Utah ski holiday right there and then. Once the lifts shut down, make memories on the alpine coaster, through the sky on the zip line, or enjoy an old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh ride.

Do you prefer to holiday at skier-only resorts? Then it’s time to try Deer Valley on for size. With a limited number of daily tickets sold, you’ll spend your precious time skiing, not queuing. Plus, nothing beats the feeling as bottomless powder turns into an expertly-gladed Aspen forest. Nothing.

Park City Resort is home to over 7,300 skiable acres and 300+ runs. If it’s diverse terrain that you’re after, you’ve come to the right place. And once you’ve tackled the perfectly groomed runs, amazing tree skiing and pristine bowls, unwind with world-class amenities and that all-important tailored spa experience.

Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon

Are you happy to forego the shopping and après ski scene on your Utah ski adventure? Then point your skis towards the Cottonwood Canyons. The towering peaks of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon – visible from downtown Salt Lake City – are home to spectacular resorts Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton. Located within 40 minutes of SLC Airport and 50 minutes of Park City, each ski resort features picturesque scenery, legendary terrain and cosy villages.

If you’re eavesdropping on Utah chat with frequent mentions of ‘deep and steep’, chances are they’re talking about none other than Alta Ski Resort. The no-frills, skiers-only destination features challenging off-piste terrain, spectacular views, and plenty of snow. And, if your party’s a mixed bag of ski skills, you’ll be pleased to learn there’s loads of terrain for beginners and intermediates too.

Snowbird Resort offers intense intermediate and advanced runs that put you through your paces and leave you begging for more. Like starring in your very own Warren Miller film, this beautiful location with loads of snow will ruin you for other ski destinations.

Solitude Resort features diverse terrain and deep powder, all in a family-friendly environment. Forego lift lines and quickly find your ski bliss. Off the slopes there’s a fun park, games room and a charming European-style village.

Brighton Resort is a low-key ski destination that’s big on personality. With everything from beginner to expert runs, it’s the perfect spot for adventures with friends or as a family. For more advanced skiers, tackle the cliffs, trees, terrain parks, and awesome back country. You can even hit the slopes at night thanks to illuminated runs, pipe and park.

In And Around Ogden

Just 35 minutes north of Salt Lake City sits Ogden, a quirky town with plenty in the way of shopping, eats, and live music. Plus, there’s the breath-taking views of Wasatch Mountain Range.

Ogden is a mere 20 minutes’ drive from two unique Utah ski resorts, Snowbasin and Powder Mountain. Each features diverse terrain, un-crowded slopes and inspired skiing.

Snowbasin Resort is home to 3,000 acres and 3,000 vertical feet. Even on a “busy day” you’ll share the slopes with a mere 3,000 skiers meaning uncrowded access to superb terrain, meticulously-manicured groomers, and plenty of steeps and deeps.

Utah’s Powder Mountain has next to no crowds also. And with 7,000 skiable acres, it’s hardly surprising. The no-frills resort offers hassle-free slope time in the shape of endless powder, untouched corduroy, cost effective cat skiing and zero lift lines.

Destination Utah Tips

Here’s how to get the most of your Utah ski holiday:

• On a powder day head to Solitude Resort or Powder Mountain. Solitude for the sheer volume of snow and amazing terrain; Powder Mountain for the unbeatable off-piste skiing.

• Are you a fan of big mountain skiing? Tackle the steep and deep both Snowbird and Alta resorts have to offer.

• On bluebird days, choose Park City Resort or Snowbasin. If you’re not afraid of a little leg burn, tackle 400 metre long, natural half pipe Canis Lupus at the Canyons Village sid eof Park City.

• For terrain park junkies, try the superpipe at Park City  Resort. Scott’s bowl and the McConkey’s offer good steep pitch and tight lines.

• Migrate over to Deer Valley Resort in the days immediately after a storm. There you’ll find plenty of powder off the beaten track.

• Looking to relax come Sunday? A visit to Sundance Resort allows you to ski the morning then tackle brunch at the Foundry Grill.
