Insider Tips

On a powder day head to Honeycomb Canyon. Ride the Sunrise lift from the base then ski over to the Summit chair.

At the peak you’ll be treated to an awe-inspiring view of the canyon. If you’re there early, drop straight in from the top.

You can also hike out along the ridge to your right. It’s a mellow route that will lead you to the tree lines of Buckeye Junior and Black Forest. Drop in anywhere; these aspects stay shady and can hold light, dry powder for days.

Small is Beautiful.

Solitude is an aptly named small resort in the picturesque Big Cottonwood Canyon area, only 45 minutes from Salt Lake City and 60 minutes from Park City. Solitude uses the marketing catchphrase ‘refined by nature’ and it is easy to understand why. Big Cottonwood Canyon generates reliable snowfall as it has its own micro climate system. Solitude itself has a unique character and there is much to like about the cosy European style village and exciting terrain. Despite being easy to reach it has a remote feel and would suit those wishing to get away from it all.

Solitude is a deceivingly small in appearance offering 65 named runs. It is well suited to intermediate level skiers upwards; beginner level would perhaps benefit from more extensive opportunity elsewhere. Boarders will be at home shredding the deep powder found in the backcountry. The ‘Solitude Nordic Centre’ offers 10km of cross country trails in an enchanted forest setting. Intermediate level hoping to work on their skills are well catered for with a wide selection of more challenging blue runs. Advanced and expert will enjoy steep groomed blacks and black diamond tree lines. Solitude is a mountain of two halves and its most exciting terrain feature is the Honeycomb Canyon area.

Honeycomb Canyon is Solitude’s signature feature, boasting backcountry terrain that has the advantage of being lift accessible. The Canyon lies adjacent to the main resort and is accessed by riding the Summit chairlift and bearing hard left through the gate. Taking a high traverse to the left leads to a more open area with access to several chutes. Bush bashers delight is found by taking a line to the right to play in the Black Forest. Get the adrenaline pumping with those powder turns before cruising to the bottom while catching breath on the idyllic homeward run.

Mountain exploration is thirsty work and all epic days on the hill should end with cold beers and warm food. Solitude offers no shortage of refreshment solutions. The on mountain options are quite limited and basic in their offerings but are nonetheless hospitable. Sip on hot chocolate in the round house while the friendly attendant entertains with celebrity gossip from the Sundance film festival. A decadent yet homely atmosphere can be found in the village at Kimi’s where excellent service combines with a perfect Apres ski menu. A unique fine dining experience is offered by snowshoeing to a Yurt nestled in the trees, to be welcomed with a 5 course meal.

Solitude is small and friendly offering the personal touch to visitors. It is perfect for a relaxed and intimate trip and would suit romantic couples well. There is enough here to support a stay of a few nights and is a fun day trip. It would not suit those looking for vast terrain acreage and a raging nightlife but therein lies the appeal of solitude: size isn’t everything, small is beautiful.

Adell Holmes- Solitude Review

Beautiful scenery, this place is a well kept secret.

Solitude is a small, beautiful resort with great terrain. For some reason there is nobody there, but who really cares when you feel like you have the entire place to yourself.

No lift lines all day and wide open runs for all levels of skiers. Plenty of tree skiing and steeps. We followed Briony and Scott  into Honeycomb canyon where you can traverse across the bowl and drop in anywhere along the way you are confident. Great fun and hard to believe you are skiing in a resort.

The best mexican food for lunch.

I love the cottonwood canyon resorts.
